Tips to Foster Children’s Independence

In this exclusive expert interview, Mr. Ringle Leung, Director of HealthyMind Parents Academy, suggests an alternative to the unconditional support parents tend to provide. He says finding the right incentive to motivate their child to be independent is the ticket! Don’t miss Mr. Leung’s sharing for the practical tips on fostering your child’s independence! Among others, he suggests:

  1. Identifying the type of support your children need: Parents should differentiate between things children can accomplish by themselves and things they cannot do even with the right support.
  2. Offering the right motivation: Children below the age of 6 usually need extrinsic motivators (e.g. rewards) to do things, while intrinsic motivators (e.g. affirmation, a sense of achievement) work better for those older than the age of 6.

Dive into an Immersive Parent-Child Workshop at the Dental Clinic! 🦷

In our April theme, “People We See in Our World,” our PN/K1 Preparation class students, along with their parents, embarked on a fun trip to the dentist clinic!

Dressed in mini-white coats, our curious learners wanted to learn all about what happens at the dentist workplace! Not only did they tour around the clinic to take a look at the equipment and tools, but they also received brief dental check-ups from the skilled professionals and learned proper tooth brushing, while parents received dental care tips tailored for young children!

Such immersive, real-life experiences are invaluable for children’s development, shaping their understanding of health and wellbeing from an early age. Join us for more parent-child learning experiences in the future!

Immersive Parent-Child Workshop at Ophthalmic Clinic

Under our April monthly theme “People We See in Our World”, an exclusive parent-child workshop was held at an ophthalmic clinic as an extended activity for our PN/K1 Preparation class students to explore the world of healthcare professionals.

Surrounded by a wide range of tools and equipment, our little learners observed doctors in their real-life workplaces, received a brief eye check by the professionals, and finally role-played as doctors using the equipment! Not only did the children have a blast, parents also received expert tips on ocular care for their children.

We are thrilled to receive overwhelmingly positive feedback from our parents! It was a unique learning experience for our little learners, with a perfect blend of fun and knowledge and a highlight of the importance of healthy eyes.

Four Effective ways to help parents and children cope with emotions

Parents are our forever role models! According to Mr. Ringle Leung, Director of HealthyMind Parents Academy, children are constantly – even subconsciously – tuning in to their parents’ behaviour, attitudes, and feelings. This makes it crucial for parents to manage their own emotional responses. Mr. Leung suggested the following useful tips on managing emotions for positive parenting in the video:

  1. Identify and express emotions: Many studies show that pinpointing our emotions accurately can considerably reduce the intensity of our negative feelings.
  2. Do deep breathing exercises: Deep breathing exercises, mindfulness and mediation courses can help us relax and ease our tension.
  3. Apply multi-dimensional thinking: Helplessness arises when the only solution we can think of fail to solve a problem. Thinking from different angles may be a remedy in such cases.
  4. Express emotions in appropriate ways: Different people express themselves in different ways (e.g. talking to others, being alone) to release pent-up feelings.
